Trinity Cathedral, Sumy

On the Trinity Street of Sumy, among the crowns of trees, the heavenly-colored domes of the Trinity Cathedral, the most beautiful temple of the city, tower.

The wooden church existed here in the XNUMXth century. At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, the Sumy industrial magnate Pavel Ivanovich Kharitonenko conceived to build such a cathedral, which in its beauty would surpass all the shrines of the city. To create the Trinity Church, he invited the famous Russian architect Alexei Shchusev, who was engaged in designing a mosaic floor and decorating a fence. the temple itself was built according to the project of the Sumy architect Gustav Scholz.

The construction of the great Sumy Cathedral lasted for 13 years, starting from the 1901 year. Now the Trinity shrine is located on the street of the same name directly opposite the park-estate of the collector Ivan Asmolov. In its structure, the temple resembles St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the Holy Trinity Cathedral in St. Petersburg, but there are significant differences. In the architectural composition of the Holy Trinity shrine in Sumy, elements of classicism and baroque were used. It is a single-tier, four-column, rectangular cross-domed temple. Four chapels rise above the cathedral, one of which is significantly larger than the others. From the west, the Trinity Church has a four-tiered bell tower. The portico and pilasters of the bell tower are made in the Corinthian style. Twelve bells, specially produced at the Samghins' plant, were brought from Moscow.

The interior of the temple is magnificent. Pavel Kharitonenko specially invited well-known artists at the time to decorate the interior of the Trinity Cathedral. These were Nikolay Nivinsky and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. Nikolai Nivinsky has picturesque sketches on canvas, in niches under windows and on sails. Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin was engaged in the stained-glass window "Trinity".
