Museum "Postal Station" in Nizhyn

One of the most unique museums of Ukraine is located in the city of Nezhin. The only almost completely preserved complex in the buildings of the post office (the eighteenth century) in Ukraine, in which the museum of horse mail is open.

In 1669, according to the "Glukhovsky articles" - the agreement of the Zaporizhzhya Cossack army with Moscow - in Kiev, Nezhin, Baturin built special yards for receiving mail and horse content. This is the ancestor of the modern "Ukrposhta".

Of the three cities, it is in Nizhyn that the only complex of buildings of the post office of the XVIII century has survived in Ukraine. In the estate, behind the materials of the archives, the post office of that time is reproduced. The exposition is based on the collections of the Nizhyn Museum of Local Lore and an invaluable collection of the famous collector - philanthropist and honorary citizen of Nizhyn O.M. Lazarenko.

Postage accessories, ink instruments of the XNUMXth - XNUMXth centuries, arched bells, candlesticks, collections of postage stamps - this is not all that can be seen in the only postal museum in Ukraine.

At this post station at various times many traveling outstanding cultural figures stayed: Mikhail Lomonosov, Marco Vovchok, Nikolai Leskov, Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Taras Shevchenko and many others.

Another interesting event happened here. In this house 25 October in 1860 in the family of the postman was born and spent his childhood an outstanding Ukrainian artist-battlesist, academician Nikolai Semenovich Samokish. The exhibition presents a variety of materials about the life and work of the artist and his students.
