Assumption Cathedral of Pochayiv Lavra

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the main temple of the Pochaev Monastery, its spiritual center. The cathedral is located in the center of the monastery complex, its golden domes rise in the sunlight over nearby white buildings. Above the central entrance is the icon of the Assumption of the Mother of God.

In 1771, according to the project of architect Gottfried Hoffmann, the construction of a majestic cathedral in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the style of the late Baroque with Catholic elements begins. Two towers at an angle to the main axis adorn the facade of the structure.

The cathedral rises above the ground at 56 meters and stands on a mountain that rises above the surrounding terrain on 65 meters. Its length is 54 m, and the width is 40 m. Inside, the architects gave the temple a cross-shaped shape. It is painted and decorated with icons and images associated with the history of the monastery and events from the life of the Savior.

Painted the temple at the beginning of the 19 century Lviv artist Luka Dolinsky, and some time later in 1874 year (after the fire) the painting of the laurel artists together with Academician Vasiliev was updated. The sculptor Polievsky completed the finishing works. The iconostasis was designed by Academician Nesterov. Thirty-three icons adorn him. The Assumption Cathedral impresses the imagination with its power, harmony and grace, grandeur and inimitable beauty.
