Museum-Estate Pirogov in Vinnitsa

National Museum-Estate of N.I. Pirogov is located on the outskirts of Vinnitsa, in the picturesque Vishnya estate, where the famous scientist, surgeon, anatomist, creator of military field surgery, founder of the Red Cross Society, teacher and public figure Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov lived and worked for the last twenty years of his life.

At the Vishnya estate, Pirogov's main occupation was medical practice. N.I. Pirogov opened a hospital here, where he set up experiments and performed complex operations. In total, the scientist lived in the estate for about 20 years with a break in Germany, where in 1862-1866 he supervised the training of young scientists at the professorial institute. From here, as a representative of the Red Cross Society, he went to the Franco-Prussian, and in 1877 - to the Russian-Turkish war.

Died N.I. Pirogov November 23 (December 5 n.s.) 1881. On January 24, 1882, his body, embalmed according to the recipes of the scientist himself, was transferred to the family tomb, over which in 1885, according to the project of academician V.I. Sychugov, a church was built and consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

This was the beginning of the Pirogov Museum in Vishna. Museum in the former estate of N.I. Pirogov was opened back in 1947. The museum complex includes such objects: a house, a pharmacy, a necropolis church, in which the embalmed body of N.I. Pirogov.
