Nikitsky Botanical Garden

Nikitsky Botanical Garden - National Science Center (NBS-NSC) was founded in 1812 year and is one of the oldest research institutions of our country. The founder of the Garden is a prominent scientist-biologist of the XIX century Christian Khristianovich Steven.

From the first days of its existence, the Garden was called upon to promote the accelerated development of agricultural production in the south of the country on the basis of the introduction, acclimatization, selection and wide dissemination of southern fruit, flower, ornamental, new technical, medicinal and other useful plants, study and active use of local plant resources. In order to quickly enrich the domestic agricultural production with new plants, the founders of the Garden established strong business and scientific ties with the leading botanical institutions in Europe, Asia and America. This allowed to collect here unique collections of species, varieties and forms of different cultures.

Nikitsky Botanical Garden - The National Science Center of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine is the ancestor of such new branches of the national economy as southern ornamental horticulture, southern and subtropical fruit growing, viticulture, essential oil plant growing and tobacco growing.

Currently, according to leading experts in the field of botany, the Nikitsky Botanical Garden is one of the world's most famous botanical institutions and the largest collections of the gene pool of valuable plants. NBS-NSC is the only repository of species and varietal diversity of southern fruit crops, including more than 11 varieties of peach, apricot, plum, fig, pomegranate, olive, zizifus, cherry, persimmon. Here, unique collections of ornamental woody and herbaceous plants, flower and aromatic cultures are collected.

World famous was brought to the Garden by its unique arboretum (arboretum), which is a visiting card of the botanical science of Ukraine for many millions of domestic and foreign tourists, specialists and crop scientists. Here on the area of ​​about 40 ha are concentrated collections of woody plants of the world flora. Arboretum NBS-NSC has always been and remains an object of primary preservation. In December 2001 arboretum NBS-NSC received the status of national treasure of Ukraine, and in September 2009 the Crimean herbarium collection of NBS-NSC also received this status. Currently, NBS-NSC is the leading institution in Ukraine in the field of decorative plant growing.
