The Bernardine Monastery is an architectural monument of the 15 in, which preserved the features of the epoch and absorbed the history and secrets of the past.
The first mention of the monastery refers to 1460 g, when this place was a small wooden church. Later, the construction of a whole complex with its own system of fortifications began here. On the city rampart between the Royal Bastion and the Galician Gate appeared a powerful Bernardine bastion. It was a fortified monastery, surrounded by a rampart and a moat. In 17-18 centuries, buildings made of wood were replaced with stone ones.
In 1630 г on the territory of the complex appeared the church of St. Andrew and the building of cells. Around the monastery, powerful stone walls were erected, loopholes were erected, a tower with the Glyniansky gates was built. The defensive system of the complex was able to withstand more than one severe siege.
The architect of the lower part of the church basilica is Italian Pavel Roman. After his death, in 1618 g, the Swiss architect Ambrose Prichylny takes up the case. The idea of his predecessor seemed to him too modest. As a result, a new construction plan is being born. Ambrose is the author of a complex shield-pediment of a bizarre shape. Today, this part is considered the main value of the architecture of the monastery.
